Greek yogurt is an excellent source of high quality protein. In comparison to regular yogurt, it typically has double the amount of protein. There are many varieties of Greek yogurt that are both low in calories and high in protein, especially the nonfat plain yogurt choices. One of the main reasons Greek yogurt is considered a super food by many is because of its high protein and typical low-calorie nutritional content. Below we have listed a selection of Greek yogurt brands and have focused just on their protein and calories. We used the typical 5.3 single serve container (except where noted) for our comparisons below. Please see our post titled Healthiest Greek Yogurt – Comparison of Major Brands for a look at all of the major nutritional content for the top U.S. brands.

The average protein for a 5.3 ounce container of Greek yogurt appears to be about 12-14 grams. In comparison, a 3 ounce piece of raw Atlantic salmon has approximately 17 grams of protein. The protein content of Greek yogurt is extremely high considering it is a meatless product. In terms of calories, all but one Greek yogurt product has 200 calories or below, with a large portion having 150 calories or below. By far, the best choice for high protein and low-calorie count is the plain nonfat yogurt, but if you’re into more excitement there are plenty of flavored varieties that are still high protein/low-calorie.
